Cell Phone Policy
Personal Device Policy: At Global Leadership Academy, we care deeply about the mental health of our students as well as their ability to engage both academically and socially. The use of personal devices (cell phones, smart watches, iPads, headphones, etc…) prohibits/limits our students’ ability to connect to each other and their learning. Many of our students are addicted to their devices, and we simply are not able to compete for their attention; it is a global crisis that is now being addressed through state law.
Our policy is that cell phones, headphones, and other personal electronic devices are not permitted to be used inside Global Leadership Academy during school hours (8:10-3:20). Students are required to keep cell phones and personal devices in their backpack or a place where it is not seen while they are in the building. The only exception to this policy is when a device is needed for medical purposes, and it is approved by administration through a formal health plan. Please review the information below to understand our course of action if a student’s personal device is seen:
-
Students may have their devices on them, but they may not be visible at any point during the school day. Visibility does include in a student’s pocket. It is important that our students are not distracted by notifications going off while the device is in their pocket.
-
Personal devices also may not be used during lunch or passing periods unless a student is outside of the building.
-
If a student’s device is seen by a staff member, it will immediately be confiscated and taken to the main office for storage until the end of the day.
-
FIRST OFFENSE: The device will be released to the student at the end of the day.
-
SECOND OFFENSE: Parent/guardian will be required to pick up the device from the main office.
-
MULTIPLE OFFENSES: Student will be required to turn in his/her devices to the main office at the beginning of the day.
-
Please know that this policy is grounded in research and is not intended to be a consequence. This intervention is about creating a safe, productive learning environment that is centered on face-to-face connections, academics, and overall well-being. If you need to contact your child(ren) at any point during the school day, please contact the main office and we will happily relay any messages OR will invite your child to the main office to call you directly. We look forward to partnering with you all to help our students focus on learning.
